Wells Gordon

I am a recording artist whose practice brings together musicianship, musicology, history, technology, pedagogy, and media production. Based in Tallahassee, Florida, I serve as teaching faculty in the College of Music at Florida State University, where I teach courses in Pro Tools, Audio Production I and II, Music Mixing, and Applied Studio Techniques.

What does it mean to be a recording artist, rather than a recording engineer, music producer, or media producer? These distinctions reflect an industry that has increasingly given way to a more interconnected and fluid creative landscape. The boundaries between musician, artist, technician, producer, historian, and executive are no longer clearly defined. Instead, these roles overlap, inform one another, and collectively shape the contemporary practice of recorded music.

I approach recording as an act of musical collaboration, whether performing alongside colleagues or capturing the work of fellow musicians, performance artists, and ensembles. My role is to translate the expressive intentions of a performance into a sonic experience that preserves its emotional depth, artistic identity, and stylistic character. This requires not only technical proficiency, but also an understanding of the musical, historical, and aesthetic contexts in which the work exists.

My practice is guided by a close attention to timbre, dynamics, space, and presence. Through the interplay of these elements, I seek to shape recordings that honor the individuality of each performance while remaining attentive to the broader artistic vision. Informed by music history, musicological inquiry, and an evolving relationship with recording technology, my work considers the recording process not simply as documentation, but as an interpretive and creative practice—one that brings musical ideas into focus while preserving the distinctiveness of the artists who create them.
